Comparing and Understanding

Photographers Old and New

Henri Cartier Bresson

Henri Cartier Bresson is a classical photographer who does a lot of street photography. His work is very broad in subjects and very complex in meaning and leading lines.
This particular photograph is very strong in leading lines as it leads our eyes to the subject of man on the bike. The reason behind the man on the bike could be that he is trying to get away from someone or something so he is using the bike to go fast in the opposite direction.
The photographer would have had to been very quick and hidden to take this photograph as the subject could have seen and avoided the photographer.
Overall the photograph is successful and is very planned and candid.
Personally this photograph is amazing and very precise because its accidental but it looks planned. The main focus of this is the alignment of the boat tip to the over hanging part of the bridge.
The girl running across is surprisingly in focus which surprises me so it shows that Bresson was definitely waiting for someone to cross and then took the photograph when someone ran across.
The photograph links well to Eric Kim below as it is very detailed and in focus and seems to be done to a certain calming atmosphere similarly to the first Eric Kim photograph.
Overall this photograph is strong in focus and is very detailed as we can see on the boats design and on the bridge bank.
In this particular photograph the frame is made to be the broken wall and its as though the kids are trying to escape the destruction by jumping out of the frame.
The lined composition is mostly to do with eye sight and how the kids eyes are all linked into eachother. This was un intentional as a few of the kids are not looking at the camera which shows only a few were actually paying attention to the photographer.
This photograph links into Eric Kim as his work is also focsuin on the person therefore making the person a frame and not using the conventional photography techniques and skills. Also the photographs link due to the blurriness of some part of the photograph.

Eric Kim

Eric Kim is a contemporary photographer very active in the current year and before.
His work is very close to alot of the classical street photographers because he takes his personal inspirations from them.
This photograph in particular is very composed and sharp on the face of the man. The one thing that he did uniquely in this photograph was he created a blurred background but a sharp contrast on the person.
This photograph is very close in aspects to the photograph of Bresson when the man on the bike is going fast and the rest of the image is very sharp but the man is very blurred due to the shutter speed.
I can take the blur of th background as my inspiration for my work.
The composition of the photograph to the right is very strong as Eric Kim uses the lines of the road and the buildings to lead our eyes straight to the model which in this case is the lady in the hat.
The expression of her face and the way Kim had gone really close links to Bresson as he took pictures of the children in a broken down area with many different facial expressions.
The context behind this photograph kind of links loosely to the context of the Bresson image of the bridge and the running lady as it is very public and you can exactly see the area and picture yourself in this image.
The lighting and contrast is my personal take away information for my shoot.
The photograph is strong in contrast and context. The contrast links well to the contrast and of the bridge and lady running across as the landscaping and architecture is strong in that aspect with contrasts.
The context of this photograph is to capture someone in motion/with emotion so here we see the man is very relaxed and goes against societies view on people who have tattoos and a deep look to them this directly links to the man on the bike and the children as he captures these in motion either playing games in the area or even riding a bike really fast in the road.
I want to take the sharpness away from this photograph.
